Grow Spiritually

How Do I Grow Spiritually?

Once you receive Christ as your Savior, you get to grow in new life and freedom found only in Him. Here are several important ways to grow in your relationship with God.

Get Baptized.

Your decision to follow Jesus Christ as your personal Savior is the most important decision you have ever made in your life! After your salvation, the Bible commands us to be baptized in water – like Jesus was.

Baptism is a public declaration of your decision to follow Him. In baptism, we follow Jesus’ example and command. Your salvation is personal, but not private. Baptism is public because all of God’s family wants to celebrate with you. The water is symbolic of Jesus washing away our sin and giving us new life. It reminds us that we are becoming a new creation in Him. Being baptized should be one of the first things a person does after receiving salvation.

Get Connected.

Small Groups – Growing in your faith cannot happen in a vacuum. We need each other. The deep relationships formed in small groups help us walk through life and grow closer to God. Visit groups.theoaksonline.org to find a small group that fits your life.

Alpha Class – Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. We want to answer your questions about faith and God. Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter, and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile…questions like—Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going? This six week class meets on Wednesday nights throughout the year. Visit alpha.theoaksonline.org to register for the next class.

Read your Bible every day to get to know Christ better.

The Bible is given to us by God to show us how we can have a relationship with Him through Jesus. When we read the Bible, we learn who God is and how He works in our lives.

2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

One of the best places to start reading the Bible is the book of Mark. Mark tells the story of Jesus’ life and how He saves us. Watch this short video about the gospel of Mark by The Bible Project:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGHqu9-DtXk

Start reading the Gospel of Mark today. We recommend reading a chapter a day until it is finished. The chapters are short and simple to read, and this will be a great start to forming a daily habit of spending time in God’s Word.

Talk to God in prayer every day.

Prayer is one of the primary ways in which we interact with God. We share our thoughts, concerns, and allow space for Him to work in our lives. Some people are uneasy about praying because they don’t know where to start. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. It’s a time to talk to Him about anything that’s on our mind and receive his direction and encouragement.

Philippians 4:6 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Here are some practical tips for praying:

  • Set reminders throughout your day to stop for a moment to think about the Lord and share your thoughts with Him.
  • Take time to listen. One of the first ways to hear God’s voice is through reading His Word, the Bible. Try praying after reading your Bible. Over time, you will learn to hear his voice.
